This last item is not a pretty, nor pleasant topic, but it exists any way. If you haven’t had to deal with this yet, just hold on.

While I started teaching in the Unied States around fifty years ago, things were changing back then.

I had a great music teacher starting when I was in or around my eighth grade, who remained a long time friend. When I started teaching, ironically he was still in the same school  where we met.

When i started teaching there, he told me of the differences in students just from my classes to what was happening then. He told me that we – my class and mates,  were a mischievous bunch, but we were easily manageable; the kids he was dealing with then was a physically belligerent bunch of kids; but mostly a vocally belligerent bunch.

I graduated high school in 1971. I went to a  parochial school, and for the most, I enjoyed it – or maybe I’m nostalgic at the moment… who knows now? 😋

My parents were typical of the day: “do as you’re told”, and in short – “behave”. The ill-mannered kids existed, but were not influencers/not people we wanted to be like. We thought about them, briefly, then soon forgot them.

Many of my then classmates went on to become teachers and/or professors as well.

Now days, there’s an all new set of children. I haven’t taught in a school setting since pre-pandemic times. My basically one time run in with “headstrong” kids was here in Mexico.

Without getting into details, I was similar (not the same, but similar) to the teacher who was throwing furniture around. I just kicked the bottom of an empty student chair in a class where a student, who was adept at ‘angering’ (not my word of choice) teachers.

I like teaching, so I want back to teaching in a school for those wanting to learn, not have to. Since then, I’ve started teaching online.
