Many years ago, I had to take a class to teach in a Mexican school. One of the things the instructor said in the class was that the level of education from K to 12 was great; afterward K thru 12, the level went down, but he didn’t know why.
This past weekend, this subject came up with one of my students, who just happens to be a PhD degreed professor at a popular Mexican university.
His reply was that:
1. Many Mexican universities are free, so the student’s do not put much value into learning;
2. The curriculum does not teach critical thinking.

In our conversation about this subject, I told him how many English schools in the Mexico City area (from my experience) will NOT hire native English speakers, because, as I found out later, they/we can not be controlled.
When I started working at the school where I was studying (above), I started talking to the owners of the franchise with an effort to help them with marketing – “… you get more students, I get more to teach”. IMO, a win-win situation!
No.
Although I used to be a marketing director back in the States, that held no value with them. I eventually got so few classes with them, I went and taught at another organization – which increased my pay three times!
Although the move was better, the point is, critical thinking didn’t exist there, nor in higher education here. Obedience is of more importance here… in your area?
Okay, now that we’ve defined critical thinking, and we (should) know that we’re currently in one of those ‘spirals’. How do you get out of that intelligence defying circle?
Here’s a YouTube Short that should help you with your dilemma;
Hopefully you understand why I empathize learning with a human, and with me – as I’ve said many times before, while I can teach beginners English to native Spanish speakers, my best classes are for people who know ‘some’ English, then I can help you in your school tests/exams; to acquire test levels – up to and including IELTS and TOEFL tests. Even better, you can learn, if you want, idioms (expressions), sarcasm, culture and more – things that you will not learn via a computer, nor at any course level. Courses are made to teach you only the language and how to use it at an academic level.
So, how much English do you want to learn? How much do you need to know, even just to watch movies?
