Augment and Critical Thinking. What Do These Have to do With English?

Separately or together?

How or even why, why would you want to separate the two?

Let’s take a look at the word augment from a dictionaries point of view. Remember, read the whole definition:

Okay, augment what?

Something many, I dare say, most people never learned, let alone, apply.

Okay, so what is that, you’re asking?

How to think, critically.

Say what?

You’re saying that you know how to think, everyone does that! So what’s up with thinking critically? Why critically?

Okay, so you say you know how to think, but what does criticality have to do with thinking?

Well, let’s break it down a bit. What does critical mean?

Got it?

I hope so, so let’s move along.

What is so special about thinking differently that I already do? you ask.

When you’ve covered critical, and augment… let’s bring that work back into this discussion.

Okay, okay, what is Critical Thinking?

Well, here’s the dictionary definition;

Now that you know how to define the idea, let’s show a practical application and it’s outcome;

Why am I emphasizing critical thinking?

In my class with my fifteen (15) year old student, I told him that his “dad” (also a student) confided with me that they were watching a television program together recently, and the program had a joke in it that he, the teenaged student understood automatically, but the dad didn’t understand.

The joke is not difficult to understand, but literally, with a little critical thinking or understanding, the teenager understood it and then had to explain it to his dad.
