Let’s Look at a Word We Use Often, but Probably Don’t Understand Well

What’s the word?

We use it a lot in various situations and conversations, and although many of us do not care, is it a noun, a verb, an adjective, or something else?  Well, let’s look!

First example: the tide of public opinion

Second example: The boat got swept away in the tide.

So, what part of a sentence is the word?

You don’t know, or you’re not sure?

Okay, okay…

Here’s a dictionary to explain it, with examples, the words history and a bit more:

Merriam-Webster’s definition of “tide”: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tide

For a moment, let’s look at the word tide which has become a description, and even a small phrase. It’s used to talk about something all of us have noticed, we’ve probably heard this descriptive phrase used a few times, but either don’t understand what it means, or forgotten its meaning. It’s not in either of the dictionaries I use, but it’s in a common enough source.
